Рассказ о своей авантюрной жизни Джованни Финати, уроженца Феррары, волею обстоятельств проведшего много лет в странах Ближнего Востока и Северной Африки. Благодаря знанию восточных языков и местных обычаев сопровождал в качестве проводника европейских исследователей в их путешествиях по региону. В том числе Уильяма Бэнкса в его поездке по Нилу и Нубии, а в дальнейшем – по Святой Земле. Будучи приглашенным Бэнксом посетить его в Англии, провел значительное время в этой стране, где в 1830 году впервые опубликовал свои воспоминания.
